HIGH POINT, N.C. — High Point firefighters and Guilford County EMS responded to a near drowning of a 2-year-old child.

The incident was reported at the Copper Mill Village apartment complex 3741 Bracknell Drive at 5:09 p.m.

The victim was reportedly in a retention pond at the apartment complex. Firefighters believe the boy fell in after chasing a ball.

“There should at least be a sign, if not a sign and a fence [around the pond],” said resident William Moses, who walks by the pond daily. He believes if the community swimming pool has to have a fence so should all retention ponds, especially one near a playground. “One incident is one too many.”

The child was unresponsive and emergency crews performed CPR.

The child was initially taken to High Point Regional Hospital. The child has since been transported to Brenner Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem.

The condition of the child is unknown.
