JACKSON COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities have released a cause of death after the body of a missing teen was found in Jackson County. An autopsy reveals Alec Lansing died of hypothermia.

Investigators believe Lansing climbed a tree and fell into a stream, breaking his hip which rendered him immobile.

Searchers found Lansing’s body last Saturday. He had been missing since Nov. 10, when he walked away from a group from the Trails Carolina wilderness therapy program that was camping near Brevard. Lansing and his group were in the National Forest south of Cashiers near Heady Mountain Church Road at the time of his disappearance. Alec Lansing’s mother has filed a complaint with the Department of Health and Human services’ to investigate Trails Carolina, which is located in Transylvania County.
