RALEIGH, N.C. — Officials said Amtrak and NCDOT will be unable to operate the Carolinian and Piedmont passenger trains Saturday due to the significant number of trees and power lines still down on the railroad between Greensboro and Durham.

There are also 20 railroad crossings that do not have power to operate the crossing protection devices.

Without power all trains are required to stop prior to the crossing and the train crew must then flag the train across the crossing.

Norfolk Southern does not believe the railroad between Greensboro and Durham will be restored for passenger service until late today.

Therefore, trains 73, 74, 75, 76, and 80 will not operate today.

Train 79 the southbound Carolinian will operate on its normal schedule between New York City and Raleigh. Train 79 service west of Raleigh today will depend on when crew complete  repairs and reestablish power at multiple crossings.

Buses will operate in place of train 79 today between Raleigh and Charlotte.

Train 79 will turn at Raleigh and head back to NY to come south as 79 tomorrow.  All trains are scheduled to operate on Sunday. No alternate transportation service is being offered for trains 73, 74, 75, 76 and 80 today.

All other Amtrak national system trains that do not operate between Greensboro and Durham are operating on their normal schedules.

CSXT freight service thruout NC has returned to normal. All Norfolk Southern freight service with the exception of Greensboro to Durham has returned to normal.  NS expects freight service to return to normal on Sunday.
